  • John Nash (1928–), mathematician, Nobel Prize winner,subject of the film A Beautiful Mind:From 1949 through 1953, mathematician John Nash made major advances in a math field called game theory. Soon afterward, he developed schizophrenia and dropped out of sight. But his ideas stayed on the radar, revolutionizing economics. In 1994, Nash received a Nobel Prize. A few years later, his dramatic story was told in a best-selling book called A Beautiful Mind. A popular movie by the same name followed.

  • Will Elliott
    •  Australian author Will Elliott’s first novel was published in 2006. Titled The Pilo Family Circus, the horror novel earned international acclaim. It was a smashing debut for the young author. But what most fans didn’t know was that Elliott was locked in an ongoing battle with schizophrenia. In 2009, he shared his personal story in a memoir titled Strange Places (not yet in U.S. bookstores)
  • PeterGreen
    •  Musician and songwriter Peter Green is considered one of the best blues guitarists to ever come out of England.  As the original leader of Fleetwood Mac, he wrote classic songs such as “Black Magic Woman.” Then drugs and schizophrenia intervened. Green left the group in 1970, but he continued to record sporadically.In 1998, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Fleetwood Mac..
  • Roky Erickson
    • Roky Erickson was singer and songwriter for the 13th Floor Elevators in the 60s. The group’s psychedelic sound quickly made a lasting mark on rock. Then Erickson’s life was sidetracked by drugs, hospitalization, and schizophrenia. His fans never forgot him, however, and he continued to make music periodically. In 2005, a documentary about his life, called You’re Gonna Miss Me, was released.
  • Elyn Saks
    • Law professor Elyn Saks is an expert on mental health law. For years, she was known as a legal scholar. Then Saks made it personal. In her 2007 memoir, The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness, she revealed that she had been battling schizophrenia for decades. Saks received a $500,000 MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 2009.
